The Power of the Scriptures
Potosí is an interesting place. The sky is always blue, its always sunny, but it's cold. It looks like a summer but it feels like winter. Every day I want to leave the house without a coat, but you cant do that. This week it was crazy windy. Not just any old wind, wind that blows over light poles and things like that. Winter has finally started... kinda. What I heard is by the time July hits its twice as cold and twice as windy. This week I have been leaving the house every day with two pants, two socks, thermal sweater, my white shirt, regular sweater, two pairs of gloves, a beanie, and my coat. I'm warm with all of this now so no problem. BRING IT ON COLD! :) With the winter season brings on the Peanut and Chuño season. For those of you who don't know what Chuño is I will give you the details. Chuño is a food... at least they say it is. It is potato that is not grown all the way that either freezes from the cold or the people pull it early from the ground and freeze it with water over night, then let it sit out in the sun and freeze dry. They then take the Chuño and trample it under their feet to completely dry it out, like a raisin potato. They do this without washing the potato or their feet. You should look up Chuño on the internet. Its quite interesting haha I have been really blessed to have a pension who do not eat Chuño. Normally one of the biggest things that the missionaries talk about are their Chuño experience here in Potosí. I had it when I was in Cochabamba and it made me sick. I love being here in Potosí, cold, wind, and all. Most importantly I am really grateful for my Savior and for all He does for us. Each day is a gift from God, a new opportunity to better ourselves, to better our behavior. I love a quote in Preach My Gospel by Boyd K Packer. It says: "Doctrine understood changes attitudes and behavior. The study of the Doctrines of the gospel will change behavior quicker that the study of behavior will improve behavior." I know that this is true. As we study the scriptures every day, we will naturally change, because the scriptures are the words of Christ. As we read his words, we are coming close to Christ. If anyone is struggling with sin or just something that they just don't like about themselves, the scriptures help. We all have those habits that we hate and want to change. Maybe for someone its sloppiness, or not exercising, or laziness, or addiction. We can conquer all of our weaknesses through the Atonement of Christ. Though His words in the holy scriptures (Ether 12:27). The scriptures are like our guide book to change, or our road map to eternal life. This week I have seen the power of the scriptures in action. I know that through the Atonement of Christ and his words everyone can change and become the persons God wants them to be. I encourage each and every one of you who actually read the missionary emails to make the scriptures a bigger part of your lives and see the difference it brings. Les quiero cada uno de uds, y estan en mis oraciones. (I love each one of you, and you are in my prayers.)
